I hope people will eventually realize that we are at war. The Right is waging a full-blown onslaught upon American democracy. The idea of “resistance” can no longer be theoretical. Shit got real. Time to put aside the slogans and step up. Between us, I’m glad hackers finally got tired of swiping credit card data and are trying to do something useful. If you want to be hardcore, be fucking hardcore. There will soon come a time when it’s put up or shut up, fight back or kneel. Future historians will be looking back upon what we do today and in the months to come.

This time, may the wave not crest and roll back.

“There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda… You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning…

“And that, I think, was the handle — that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave…

“So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave broke and rolled back.”

~ Hunter S. Thompson, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, 1971

Thompson was summing up the 1960’s, and a time when the predecessors to progressives thought they were making the world a better place. But fascists always push back. What could not have been foreseen in the 1960’s was that the love power generation would galvanize conservatives into a potent political force which saw its first significant successes under Ronald Reagan, launching an onslaught with a long-term plan which has relentlessly pushed the country far to the right from where it was 50 years ago. In the 1980’s someone like Hillary Clinton could have run as a staunch conservative. We’ve drifted that far to the Right. There IS no “left” anymore. Whatever they call themselves (ie Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative), in practice our political process is dominated by moderate conservatives and far right conservatives.

The rise of the Trump regime has galvanized progressives and average Americans in to a political force which has yet to gel around a solid, effective focal point (ie a leader or an established goal). But there is a spirit afloat in America which we haven’t experienced in a very long time. There is hope, however weak the flame may burn in that flickering candle in the darkness.

This time, may the wave not crest and roll back. This time may the wave of positive, lasting change overcome the ideology of fascists in a tsunami of genuine human determination, that we will NOT return to the destructive, deadly ways of the past. We must evolve beyond our baser natures, or we are doomed.

This time, may the wave not crest and roll back.
