Someone Else

There is no balm
Nor soothing salve
That can help the
Charred flesh heal.
No comforting words
Nor kind support
That can make
Betrayal un-real.
There is no hope
For my rebirth
In the eyes of
These staring ghosts,
Who look like me,
Stare like me,
But must be
Someone else.

In a moment’s
Hesitation
The charlatan’s
Resignation,
I am yet unbroken,
No anguished sinner
Who sits by mirrors
Cataloging wrinkles;
No, I sit and gaze
At gaunt reflections,
Faces unknown,
Familiar strangers,
Who look like me,
Stare like me,
But must be
Someone else.
