KINGDOM OF KROZ
|
Kingdom of Kroz was written by Scott Miller and was released in 1987 by Apogee Software (who would go on to released Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D). It was written in ASCII text mode (a concept which most younger people can't wrap their brains around). Long story short, this means that the game was was implemented entirely in the text mode of the PC using various characters in the computer's character set (ASCII), as well as different colors, to present a faux graphical environment. Basically put, it wasn't a graphics-based game, but it looked kind of like it was.
I had a blast playing this game on my old 12 mHz computer (yes, that's mega-hertz, not giga-hertz, even with my monochrome monitor. True, this game was forgotten rather quickly once better graphics cards started coming into their own and games like Wolfenstein and Doom starting pushing the limits of computer gameplay.
I won't bore you with ruminations about how great Kingdom of Kroz was. I'm sure much of its appeal was rooted firmly in its time. But it's worth mentioning.
