  Robert Lattie Chaney was a pastor of Second Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, North Carolina (then known as Eastside Baptist). In 1922 the then Eastside Baptist built a new building across the road from the old building, and renamed itself Second Baptist. In July of 1950 Rev. Chaney founded Eastside Baptist Church on York Road in Kings Mountain, and served as its first pastor, at the behest of and as an outreach of Second Baptist Church. According to family recollection, he preached in a tent on that location. Second Baptist Church eventually donated the lumber for a small building to replace the tent, which, under Rev. Chaney's pastorage, was later purchased from Second Baptist (according to a May 2, 1956 article in the Charlotte Observer). In 1956 that small building was replaced by the larger building that serves as the Eastside Baptist Church to this day. Rev. Chaney is buried in Section #5 in Mountain Rest Cemetery. His occupation is listed as a cotton hand in a cotton mill in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, age 24. He is listed in the 1930 US Federal Census as living on Fairview Street, Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina, age 35 years old, with his wife, Winnie (35), and their children Lucille (15), Edith (12), Grady(10), Robert (7), Doretha (5), John (3), Martha Sue (1). They lived near his father, Robert Lee Chaney.
