The character of Crewe has been with me for a long time, but I’ve only recently started to write with him to any extent. For the most part, he’s a response to the god-awful vampire Rock star drivel of Ann Rice and the sub-culture that rose up around it, not to mention Stephenie Meyer’s horrifically bad Twilight series.
I suppose you could say that I like my vampires to be something more than a bunch of fluff and discontent. Give me Nosferatu over Lestat any day. Hell, give me Nosferatu over Dracula (a repressed gay man if I’ve ever seen one), and either one over that pouty Edward from Twilight. Come to think of it, the most enjoyable vampire book I’ve read in recent memory was Christopher Moore’s Bloodsucking Fiends, and that was humor. But I digress.
For the most part, I just wanted to re-examine the vampire myth and see if I can make it mine. It’s become quite popular of late to re-invent the vampire, and there are a lot of interesting flavors running around out there. But nothing quite like Crewe. And what of a bunch of vampires who don’t even suck blood or wear heavy mascara?
What if the every day life of a vampire is really quite boring? What if they have – *gasp* – responsibilities and mortgages and… problems. Well, other than having Kristi Swanson clones trying to drive stakes through their hearts.
I dunno. This looks like it could be fun. I’m going to see where this goes.
