We watched No Country for Old Men tonight. I have to admit to being more than a little confused by the movie. I was right with it until the crazy guy killed the guy who took the money. After that, the movie made no damned sense to me at all. I admit. I didn’t get it. Afterward I felt like I’d been at a museum looking at modern art, and the paint splashes on the canvases just didn’t add up.
I think at this point the Coen brothers could fart into a paper bag and get awards for it. I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie. I did. But I think they over-thought the premise a bit. It kind of seemed to me that unless you knew the central theme of the work going into it, it wasn’t going to make much sense to you. I dunno. Maybe they were making a commentary on the mindless violence in our society. Tommy Lee Jones’ character sure ruminated on it.
In short, I liked the movie. But I’m not sure I got it.
